2003-03-03 : Monthly Bead Bag Can't Post

We hope to have our first bead bag released for March, 2003.

We need at least 20-25 members to make this work, and to make it a viable buying concern. We have limited the program to a maximum of 75 people, but in retrospect, 50 is probably a more reasonable number, based on the quantity of similar items that are usually available.

As the program expands, we hope to offer the following options:

1) opt out of any specific month - we'll have a 1 week opt-out period as we pack the boxes, and if you decide to opt out, your subscription will be extended by 1 month.

2) preferences -- by color, type of bead (no seed beads, etc), and other such. While we can't guarantee it, we'll try to make up boxes by these preferences, which will give everyone more of a range of quality items.

3) quarterly memberships -- you'll get a package every 3 months, with items picked from the previous 3 months, and other sources.

4) Business/Designer memberhips, for $100/month or more. A much larger, more varied package, that you can pick either "Centerpiece" or "Mixed" programs. Centerpiece memberships will have beads valued at at least $5 each, while "Mixed" will run the full range.

5) As a rock shop, we tend to favor "naturals" over glass, polymers, ceramics, etc. Our general memberships will be a roughly 70/30 split in that direction. We hope to be able to offer other options for heavier into Lampwork Glass, Crystals, and Acrylics.

6) -- anything else people ask for, or seem to want.

The goal is to make this fun, and to give you a chance to expand your selection of beads, beyond what you would normally be able to get if you had to buy whole strands, rather than single beads, or bead groups.

Centerpiece beads will usually be sent as singles.

Other beads will be sent as pairs, or larger groups.

This is *NOT* a way for us, or our suppliers, to clear out "odd lots" of ugly, unwanted, mis-matched or otherwise "seconds" type beads.

We will have a *heavy* emphasis on "naturals" like quartz, jaspers, and other minerals. We have the expertise to grade and select high-quality items and pass on the lesser grades. We feel this will be the strongest selling point of our club -- the ability to get high grade naturals in a wide selection, often for less than the price of lesser grades

It looks like the theme for this bag will be Tiger Eye and Rose Quartz. I have some more unusual Tiger eye beads coming in, there must have been a good find of Grade A/A+ tiger eye, because this stuff is better than anything in years. It *can't* last, and I'm trying to get what I can in the larger, more unusual sizes.

I'm getting a lot of requests for lapis and sodalite in the shop, blue must be "in" this season, so who knows what else may find it's way in... pinks and blues? Good theme this time of year.

I found a few interesting "pillow" or "medlion" cut ocean jasper. The first 12 signed up will definitely get one. I'm trying to get more in, but can't guarantee they will be good enough quality to include in later member bags (substitutions may be made).

I'm in the process of creating the first kit now.

I hope to have some photos up in a day or two.

What is the general opinion: Would you like to see exotic stuff and focal beads, or would you like to get more normal stuff in higher grade and a larger quantity?

The exotic and focal beads, will come as small amounts, or even one bead. The more normal stuff would come as 5 to 10 beads, or even a strand.
