Beading Materials Can't Post

I usually use wire and chain, but recently have decided to make all beaded necklaces. I love working with all sorts of natural gemstones, including pearls. I frequently combine them with gold beads. For pearls, I use silk. I love the flow that it gives to the jewelry. But silk isn't the best thing to use with gemstones, because of the roughness of the stones. I'm looking for a good beading "thread" to use with stones, to give me the best strength and best flow. Most of my beads are 6-8mm or smaller. For stiff chokers, I use tiger tail or accuflex...but for necklaces that I want to drape, what's the best beading material?

Hi,

We use wire for most things now, even over the fishing lines. We don't do much perls.

When you say "drape" that means different things to different people, sort of like saying "green" or "blue". :)

The best way to get a nice drape with any material is not to string too tightly. This also prevents excess stress on the crimps, and ends of the materials. I know there is a *major* tendency to hide every bit of wire, but why? That last inch is behind the neck, and unless you are long-necked, shaved and wering a low cut top, no one will see the clasp area. Even if you are, when is the last time you looked at the clasp on the back of someone's neck?

We've seen so much jewelry that barely flexes, or applies so much stress beads actually snap after awhile.

This comes mostly from people putting the last crimp on with the beads hanging straight. We usually wrap the strand around our hand to let each strand tell us where/how much breathing room it wants.

This may not be the problem here, but often the lack of a natural drape with tigertail or accuflex is simply finishing off the strand too tightly.
