BeadCreator Forum Can't Post

Cool There is a new forum for users of the BeadCreator software program. Alot of people have been having trouble getting support for this software. This is a question & answer forum so users can learn how to use the program better. To get to it type the address in your browser bar: http://forums.delphiforums.com/beadweaver

Good luck with your forum.

On a personal/shop note (I think we posted on this before):

Most of the pattern creation software companies are more than a bit arrogant. They want your money, but no support -- either to the users, or the bead shops.

We've tried several times to find out about the programs, but unlike most every other software company/type we've dealt with over the past 20+ years, they won't give us an evaluation copy -- and a couple insinuated (actually, flat out said) that they thought bead shops etc are theives, and we'd just steal their software, and "laughed" at us.

We gave up, and don't support *any* of the programs, and want nothing to do with a couple of the companies. One was so rude, it goes beyond words. I thought about posting their letters, so the potential customers could see what they were like, but no one would really believe they would write/reply in such a way. It would just be a lawsuit waiting to happen. But, I can generically say what I just said :)

At last survey, none of the programs was really great. Some gave great output, some were easier than others, but the bottom line is none were scan and go. They all required a lot of preparation, and a lot more effort than the average user (computer user, beader, software user, etc) could afford to give them.

We are pioneers (literally) in digital imaging, and we had major problems preparing even simple photographs for use with most of the programs. All output required a lot of manual effort. Almost, enough to do it by hand with the grid method. Really.

The programs could not sort/smooth out colors, and reduce the pallete enough to prevent major thread or color changes.

Even trying to use Photoshop, required a lot of effort (again, not scan and go).

What would be cool, is a program that just presented a grid, and let you fill in colors from a standard pallet, and there are a few javascript coloring books that let you do that.

Writing one is on my list (very, very, very long list) of things to do.

Maybe this spring/summer we'll find an intern in computers at one of the local colleges, who needs a real-world project, and set it up. Loads of ideas, but no time to actually get it done.

(If anyone has a relative/friend who needs a computer project, for real-world internships for educational or work credit, let us know and we'll try to set it up for them. We actually have several potential products, from this bead-graphing to cgi-scripting, and other easy to intricately advanced projects.)

sCool

Thank you so much for your input. This information I can pass on to others when they are in the market for a software program. It's to bad that the people that sell these programs can not be up front about the support issuesFrown

And if you do, *PLEASE* use my/our name :)

I'm not shy about this!

We've been beta testing software since about 1983, and have worked with some leading products, and information services. I've never hit anything as *miserable* as the beads/stitch software companies.

If people don't know about or use the product, it doesn't sell.

If a company has to _charge_ for demo copies, than most likely all they are selling is demo copies ;) -- ESPECIALLY to the commercial outlets.

If a store gets a demo copy, and uses it, then their customers are going to be intrigued, and are going to want it.

But, according to the beads software people, that is tantamount to "theft", and/or worse. But, from my point of view, they implied that their only customers were the shops, which is a _bad_ thing -- as you are finding out from lack of support and users/user groups.

We're a shop. I wouldn't buy any software without trying it first (I don't buy beads without seeing them first, or knowing my distributor and their quaility controls). I have more bad software than I know what to do with. So, instead of letting us use the software, and show our customers what it can do, we warn people off of all of it -- primarily because of their bad attitudes. A company that can't stand behind their product, isn't one you want to deal with (Which is why dealing with FireMountainGems.com is no brainer for mail order over some other places -- 100% satisfaction guarantee, no time limit.)

Pencil-paper-graphs work really well -- and it's portable, to where you want to work.

There is a reason the shareware concept works. People try it, if they like it, they buy it for added features, or support. A person who really can't afford to buy it, may use it, and encourage others to buy it, based on their work. No one loses, everyone gains.

I really wish I could post some of the quotes, but I was advised against it.

We are a PC shop, not Mac. So I'm really speaking only for the PC software makers. I don't have experience, directly, with the Mac developers.
