Updates end of summer 2005 and into fall Can't Post

Despite the popularity of beads and beading, Pittsburgh is still an unusual place.

While we are still looking for a recurring "local" type convention several times a year, with themes and workshops, the reality of it is Pittsburgh isn't ready.

We are looking to get travelling vendors to let us know ahead of time when they will be in the area, and we'll set up space for them, as well as get the word out. We've had a few new vendors stop by, and we are also seeing some rock/mineral/crystal dealers drive through on occasion.

After two+ years of efforts into trying to make something like this work for the Pittsburgh market, we feel our efforts will, for the short term at least, be better spent trying to get more vendors through on a regular basis, giving them a place to set up, and be the center of attention, and offer *great* discounts and selections to our customers.

We also are addressing a secondary need for certain "advanced" hobby building and model building supplies to be available. These are the "extras" like detail parts, scale lumber for building, scale plastic for building and diorama details (trees, ground covers, dirt, rocks, paints, etc) for completing those scale models or class projects.

Rather than trying to force a square peg into a round hole, we are going to add in more creative workshops on model building, model detailing, model trains, dioramas, using commercial and available parts to *BE* *CREATIVE* and think out of the box. "Kit Bashing". In this post-Martha Stewart society, everything is out-of-the-box, and people are actually *afraid* to make changes.

I'll never forget when I was cross stitching, and using double the threads on a slightly smaller canvas to get a deeper pile, and was changing something in the scene I didn't like, a person said "You can do that?" and she was *SERIOUS*!! It never occurred to her that you could take a "kit" and not make it like the box cover. That you could add, subtract, change or enhance a "kit" rather than just making it. The part that was so shocking to me, was she was a "crafty" person in general.... but was locked into a certain mind set of thinking INSIDE the box, not OUTSIDE.

It's so much more fun to do that, we are going to share the enthusiam with model builders of all ages, and bring this "out of the box" type of crafting to as many people in as many different types of hobbies as possible.

Stay tuned.... And, think out of the box and *SHARE* your own ideas with us!
