Celticlady Novice Jan 5, 2004, 2:46 PM Post #1 of 7 (26538 views) Shortcut Private Reply Lampwork bead books Can't Post Hi, Santa was nice to me for Christmas and I got a minor burner, but now I'm looking for inspiration! I was wondering if anyone out there knew of any good books! I've got "more than you ever want to know about making glass beads" not too bad, but its pictures are in B&W, except for the pages showing some peoples work. Not too bad, but I'm wanting to learn HOW to USE my burner, and can't go away for a class or two If anyone can help me out with suggestions on books or anything else, please let me know! Odette

The video was worthwhile, not for learning how to make the beads, but watching how their hands moved, and the skills they used. I'd suggest finding a video. More than a book. A book can give you color and shape ideas, but it can't show you how to move your hands, the speed to move at, and such. *THAT* is why a class is so good. I tried to make a spiral cane one day and ended up with a mess! I over heated the glass *BUT* I still made a nice bead from the mistake (that I have to repeat several times now so I can make something like a necklace from it). I have found out the white glass is EASILY over heated. There is a trick to making small dots on glass that you just can't read in a book too... I am looking into videos to get, I just haven't decided where to get them from (I'd like something closer to me than CA). Mostly I'm looking for some suggestions of what to get, instead of reading what a catalog thinks you should get. Messing about is fun and educational, you just have to be careful, also you don't learn something as quick as someone that knows what they are doing and is teaching you how to do it. Odette

That may be true, but you often learn it "better." I found in a brief time playing with the glass, that making sure there was enough 02 was key. I gave up until I could find a better torch and oxygen supply. I have found that I had been using too big a flame, and reduced the size and got much better results. I'm starting to think of a vacation down in Virginia Beach with $200 for a class so I can REALLY start to play. I should be getting "Making Glass Beads" by Cindy Jenkins soon, it at least has some nice photos of plain glass beads you can make without getting intimidated by the art stuff. Odette

Not too bad, I even tried to make a snowman in glass... didn't do too bad, I just wish I had some black glass for details though. I am having soooo much fun!

It turned out pretty well! I even ventured to make a glass snowman, and I'm pleasantly surprised with the results, although I wish I had some black glass for adding finer details.
